Fonó Wednesday: Dances from Bukovina

Bukovina is a region closely connected to Transylvania, with a unique historical and cultural heritage. It once belonged to the northern part of Moldavia. Today, the southern part of the region lies in Suceava County, Romania, while the northern part is located in Chernivtsi Oblast, Ukraine.

The history of the Székely people of Bukovina is closely connected to the 1764 Siculicidium, also known as the Massacre of Madéfalva. Fleeing reprisals, some of the Székelys settled first in Moldavia and later in Bukovina, where they established new homes in five villages: Hadikfalva, Andrásfalva, Istensegíts, Fogadjisten and Józseffalva. Count András Hadik played an important role in organizing the settlements and supporting the community, followed later by Joseph II.

The traditions of the Bukovina Székely community have preserved numerous archaic elements of music and dance in a unique way. The region’s folk music heritage fascinated early collectors as well: Zoltán Kodály visited Bukovina in 1914, and during his fieldwork encountered a musical tradition that offered insight into older layers of Hungarian folk music.

At the next Fonó Wednesday, we will explore the rich dance and musical traditions of Bukovina. Through its dances, we can get closer to the unique cultural heritage that Bukovina’s Székely communities preserved and passed down from generation to generation.
